Your guide to hot period sex

Period sex. Let’s talk about it. We won’t pretend that it’s for everyone. Like anything sex related, it’s a personal choice, and this is a judgement-free zone. But if having sex on your period is something you’re curious about, we’re here to tell you that it’s totally fine. In fact, more than fine.

Having sex while you’re on your period might sound a bit indimidating, and we get it – period fatigue is a real thing. But we reckon it’s time to redefine the narrative and embrace the idea that period sex can be hot. After all, sex is about pleasure and intimacy, so why should it be limited to non-menstrual days?

If this is all sounding like new territory, this article will arm you with knowledge and expert tips to help you navigate period sex with ease. From managing the potential mess to embracing open communication with your partner, we’ve got you covered. Because we’re big fans of a steamy sesh – bloody and all.

Can you have sex on your period?

While some may shy away from the idea – the mess, the anxiety, the discomfort – the truth is, you absolutely can have sex on your period if you want to

Concerns you might have about having sex on your period

  • Mess? Sure, there might be a bit more clean-up involved, but with a little prep, it’s a small price to pay for the pleasure and connection you can experience. Placing a dark-coloured towel on the bed can help protect your sheets, and keeping some wet wipes or another towel nearby will make cleaning up easier. Sex positions that work with gravity, like missionary, spooning and side-by-side, can also help to minimise mess. Do what makes you feel comfortable, because messy sex doesn’t have to be a bad thing.
  • Anxiety? It’s natural to feel a bit self-conscious during your period, but remember that your body is doing its thing, and it’s completely normal and beautiful. Trust your partner, communicate your feelings and take things slow. It’s always okay to stop if you’re not feeling comfortable or to change things up if things don’t feel good. Consensual sex is hot sex after all.
  • Higher risk of yeast infections? It’s possible, yes. “Being on your period can change the pH balance of the vagina,” says relationship counsellor and sexologist Isiah McKimmie. “The vagina usually needs to be slightly acidic to maintain a healthy balance, but when you’re bleeding, this balance is altered. If you’re having sex with someone who ejaculates, it can further lower the pH levels. As a result, some individuals may notice that they are more prone to infections during this time.”
  • Concern over transmitting STIs? As with any sexual activity, it’s important to prioritise safety. There is a risk – even when you’re on your period – but if both partners are free of STIs and you use barrier methods like condoms, the risk is minimal.

Can sex bring on your period?

Great question. Right before your period, your hormone levels drop to signal to your body that your period is due. So yes, sex at this point in your menstrual cycle could cause your period to start. When you orgasm, your uterus will contract and can start bleeding. Bleeding during or after sex can be caused by a whole range of things, though, so it’s important to speak with your doctor if you’re concerned.

Benefits of sex, anytime of the month

Here’s the great news – it doesn't matter if you’re on your period or not. Having sex comes with a whole heap of benefits. Picture this: lower blood pressure, a bolstered immune system and a heart that thanks you for the workout. Sex also unleashes those mighty endorphins, banishes stress hormones and helps you feel more relaxed. The result? An elevated self-esteem and a noticeable reduction in those pesky depression and anxiety vibes. Sign us up!

We can’t forget the emotional side of sex. Sex with a partner can also create a deeper sense of intimacy and closeness, fostering a stronger connection between you both.

Last but certainly not least, a little solo time is also a great way to connect with your body. Masturbation is good for you at any point during your cycle, as, just like sex, it releases endorphins and can help to improve your mood. It’s also super handy (pardon the pun) in discovering what you like.

Hot tips for hot sex

  1. Communicate, communicate, communicate

When it comes to sex of any kind, open communication with a partner is key. Talking about what you like, what you don’t like, what you want to try and what’s off-limits can make sex hotter, whether you’re on your period or not.

“Communication is one of the most important factors to having great sex at any point in your cycle,” shares McKimmie. “Take the time to have open and honest conversations with your partner about your desires, fantasies and any concerns you may have. This level of communication will not only enhance your sexual experiences but also strengthen your bond as a couple.”

  1. Get creative in the bedroom

Remember, sex isn't just about penetration. There are countless ways to engage in physical intimacy. Mutual masturbation, using toys or exploring erogenous zones can be equally pleasurable and satisfying. Experiment with different techniques and find what works best for you and your partner. It's all about discovering new levels of pleasure and intimacy together.

“A lot of vulva owners don’t actually reach orgasm through penetration sex anyway,” says McKimmie. “So especially when you’re on your period, and you might not feel comfortable with penetration, any kind of gentle touch, loving touch, kissing, stroking, breast play, or breast massage is going to help you release that hormone of oxytocin.”

  1. Make the most of the extra lube

We all know sex is better when things feel a little slippery. Your period fluid is made up of thickened endometrial cells and blood from uterine arteries. Along with your usual vaginal wetness, this fluid can act as an added bonus when it comes to lube. If you still feel like you need some extra lubrication, McKimmie recommends opting for one that’s supportive of vaginal health to avoid infection.

  1. Embrace those horny feels

Feeling extra frisky when you’re on your period? You have your hormones to thank for that. Why not take advantage of this naturally heightened drive and indulge in a little play time? Don’t let a little flow dampen your fun – let your natural desire guide you. While it’s less likely, you can still get pregnant during this time, so don’t forget about contraception.

  1. Orgasms: nature's own pain relief

We get it. Fatigue, bloating, irritability – not the sexiest trio around. But what if we told you that having sex during your period could actually provide relief from cramps and boost your mood? When you experience an orgasm, your body unleashes a delightful cocktail of chemicals, including oxytocin and dopamine. These little powerhouses not only bring you immense pleasure, but when you orgasm, the blood rushes to the uterus and helps relieve the cramps.
